Penchom Saetang from EARTH in Thailand shared that the primary driver for their advocacy is the urge to expose unsustainable industries in Thailand and find the truth about the components of air that people are breathing in areas near petrochemical industries.
Citizen science helped them with their advocacy. She emphasized that citizen science is a practical tool to empower people and increase public participation in different levels of society to effect positive change in environmental and health protection policies. She also stressed the need to work in collaboration and solidarity with scientists and experts, civil society groups, and communities to produce strategic data and information. The data collected can be used to lobby policymakers, negotiate with the polluters, and as evidence in court cases.
